Longevity medicine DNA

Imagine a future where your doctor doesn’t solely treat illness, but actively helps you stay physically and mentally young - so you’re still travelling, hiking and laughing with friends well into your 90s.

This is not something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. This is the goal of longevity medicine.

What Is Longevity Medicine?

When you hear the word ‘longevity’, you probably picture a potion of immortality being cooked up in a secret laboratory. Whilst modern medicine cannot guarantee you immortality, we do know how to proactively prevent disease and improve the quality of your life as you age.

Longevity medicine is an emerging and rapidly developing medical specialty focused on extending healthspan - the number of years a person is able to maintain optimal physical and mental function free from serious disease as they age. It is not merely about lengthening lifespan - the number of years a person lives - however, this is often improved as a result of the emphasis on healthspan.

Why Is Longevity Medicine Important?

I have not met a single person who does not want to remain healthy, active and free from major medical conditions as they age. Who wants to be 95 years old, but cannot remember who their granddaughter is? Or struggles to make it out the front door without feeling they have just run a marathon?

The development of chronic disease - such as heart disease, cancer, dementia, and metabolic dysfunction (eg. diabetes) - is the primary contributor to reduced quality of life in a person's later years. These diseases typically develop silently and slowly over decades, and are difficult to reverse once established.

A New Approach To Medical Care

The traditional model of medicine is often focused on waiting for illnesses to set in before taking action. Longevity medicine offers an alternative to the traditional model of medicine. It focuses on early detection and proactive measures to prevent disease, rather than reactive actions to treat disease once it has taken hold.

Each person has a unique health profile with distinctive genetic predispositions, testable biomarkers and lifestyle patterns, which influences how they age and their risk of chronic disease. Longevity medicine therefore emphasises a personalised approach to develop tailored strategies centred around exercise, nutrition, sleep, psychological wellbeing, supplements and medication to promote vitality and healthy ageing.
